Battleship, Bernie, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Men In Black 3
So recently did a movie marathon and knocked out four
movies: Battleship, Bernie, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and Men in Black 3. All
these movies are watchable but the clear victor here is Bernie. The Richard
Linklater film starring Jack Black is simply great. There are so many little
things about this movie that make it stand out over the others. One of the more
pleasing choices made by the director was the use of real townsfolk from Carthage, TX. These non-actors bring so many great local expressions to
the fore it’s impossible to list them all here. In any event, if you are a fan
of a well-crafted simile or idiom, then you must watch these people operate in
their element, truly classic stuff. To close, there is one particular part where
an older man breaks down Texas geography. It is so balls on accurate I almost
pissed myself. Needless to say the giant “?” over the panhandle portion of the
sate is priceless.
The movie to avoid is MIB3. So bad! Nothing funny happens
and no good existential, thought provoking bits that have been integral to the
other films. Yes Brolin is good, but go watch a better movie he’s in if that’s
what you want (No Country for Old Men, Goonies, Milk to name a few). Even
though the second one was crap, at least it has the laugh out loud moments of
David Cross and the badly made alien landing video to make up for it. This has
nothing funny and its far-outness 60’s motif doesn’t scratch the surface of
what was happening in that time period. Just my two cents worth.
